Andy McKee

In September of 2001, Andy McKee claimed the third prize in the world famous National Finger Style Guitar Championships held annually in Winfield, Kansas. This exposure, along with much play of his songs on National Public Radio stations, has propelled his original sound throughout the world. (E.g. One can easily get Andy’s CD in Japan and Taiwan, where he also performs.)

Andy came from a family of great music lovers and took up the guitar on his 13th birthday. Sometime after pursuing acoustic finger style playing, he spent an evening at a Preston Reed performance. That night, Andy was exposed to so many new ways of approaching the acoustic guitar. Alternate tunings, slap harmonics, percussive hits… a virtual ensemble was created with just a guitar. Now he was on an exciting venture, spending the next few years learning from acoustic guitar geniuses like Michael Hedges, Billy McLaughlin, Preston Reed, Don Ross, and Tommy Emmanuel. Shortly thereafter, Andy began composing, and he found his own pleasant, original sound.

That sound can be heard on Nocturne, Andy’s first CD of all original acoustic guitar solos, purchased by acoustic guitar music lovers from around the world.

As of this writing, Andy is finishing his next CD, which will be completed in February of 2004. It will feature 11 tracks of original music as well as arrangements of some of Andy’s favorite songs to be performed on guitar and harp guitar. Although Andy has enjoyed some success as an independent musician, Andy hopes to join a major record label to get his music out to as many listeners as possible.

Andy uses Dean Markley Alchemy GoldBronze gauged 13-56 (MED).
