Are you wondering what all the praise is about? This power trio from Colorado is not just breaking into the music scene. Theyve been in it for years, 18 of them, plugging away, touring (over 3500 shows to-date), quietly selling well over 2 million records worldwide. They play because-quite frankly-they are still three, high school buddies who like to jam together.
Big Head Todd and the Monsters is a small band that puts out a large sound. They play old school blues. They add rock n roll. They mix up things up with styling that Todd Mohr (guitarist/vocalist) calls techno-delta, and the end result is a tasty, delicious ear candy worthy of moving ones body on the dance floor.
Todd Park Mohr, Brian Nevin, and Rob Squires began playing together at Columbine High School in the early 80s. They started as an eclectic cover band playing everything from 50s rock covers to Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash, Sly and the Family Stone, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Bob Dylan. They continued playing together throughout their early college years, as well building their reputation as a fan-base family who continue to support them today. Big Head Todd and the Monsters shows have become a place for friends to meet each and every year.
Squires plays the bass guitar in a way such that you dont so much hear it, as you feel it. His bass rumbles in the arches of your feet; you feel its rhythm in your hips. He is the understated cowboy; his solid rhythm and tastefully chosen bass lines add the background color to the music. He also takes turns with Brian Nevin to run the business side of the band, and used to fix the Colonel when it would break down (the bands first touring van which was named after its mustard color).
Nevin is the drummer. He is the midnight music therapist; he will help you release your worries if you just lay yourself down into the rhythm of the sound. His versatility ranges from solid rock to blues, to jazz and pop. He intuitively knows where the music hes playing is going and drives it there safely.
And then, there is Todd Park Mohr, the melody maker. Mohr is a talented artist who paints a canvas of song about the world. He speaks as emotionally through his guitar as he sings with his voice, carrying you into his Space Child Astronaut world.
While many bands have broken up or changed members, Big Head Todd and the Monsters have a successful relationship that has resulted in 18 years of good tunes and good times. Their performance on stage is like the dance of a happy couple, who not only know all the moves, but also know what they need to do in order to keep things fresh. For Mohr, Nevin, and Squires, its not about image, and its not about making it. Big Head Todd and the Monsters are about music, and the gathering of friends.
