Don Ross

Don Ross has established himself as an innovative voice in guitar music and composition. His career-long goal has been to create music that stands up not only as technically intriguing, but also eminently listenable and challenging. Instead of citing the usual guitar influences, when asked where his inspiration comes from, Don usually will surprise the questioner by citing musicians like Keith Jarrett, Steve Reich, Bruce Cockburn and Pat Metheny. Of those, only Cockburn stands out as an acoustic guitar influence. When asked again, Don usually explains that his journey as a guitarist has been much less about the guitar and much more about the music.

Don has, nonetheless, proven himself as a master of his craft, being the only two-time winner of the National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship held annually in Winfield, Kansas (he won in 1988 and 1996). He has recorded 11 solo CDs over the past 19 years, and one duo recording with YouTube guitar phenom Andy McKee. He tours extensively, playing concerts in Canada, the USA, across Europe, Japan, Taiwan, and Australia. He has also performed his original music with symphony orchestras in Canada and Europe. Don does extensive work as a recording engineer and producer.

Born and raised in Montreal, Quebec, he has lived for many years in southern Ontario, Canada.

The strings Don uses are the Alchemy GoldPhos MED.

Don had this to say about Dean and his strings:
“I’m thrilled that Dean Markley makes a coated string that still has that feel that I’ve gotten used to, while having extra durability. They have a lovely even tone and take the pounding that my aggressive style subjects my strings to! All that combined with working with one of the coolest guys in the music business makes it all good!”
