Gary Mule Deer’s unique comedy and music have set him apart as one-of-a-kind. He has performed on every major concert stage in the country and made over 350 television appearances, including many on both The Tonight Show and The Late Show With David Letterman. He was one of six comedians, along with Jay Leno, to star on the first HBO Comedy Special “Freddie Prinze and Friends.” Gary was the co-host of Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert for four years on NBC, and a regular on Make Me Laugh. He is currently featured on the DVDs “Jeff Foxworthy’s Comedy Classics,” and “The World’s Greatest Stand-up Comedy Collection.” Gary’s most recent appearance on David Letterman was September 19, 2009.
Gary entertains regularly in Las Vegas, Reno, Lake Tahoe and Atlantic City. He has shared the stage with everyone from Ray Charles, Roy Orbison, and Frank Sinatra to Willie Nelson, Reba, and Vince Gill. For over fifteen years he has been touring in concert as special guest with Johnny Mathis, everywhere from the Hollywood Bowl to Royal Albert Hall in London. Gary performs often on the Grand Ole Opry, and on January10, 2009, he appeared at Carnegie Hall. In May 2009, Gary was inducted into the South Dakota Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Bob Goen of Entertainment Tonight said of Gary Mule Deer, “This guy has got to be the funniest man on the planet.” An equally great singer and musician, he has been singing the music of Johnny Cash in his show for four decades, and his interpretation of Cash’s music is considered the best. Gary has a country and rockabilly music CD, “Six Days On The Road,” with his Duck and Cover Band, some of Nashville’s finest musicians, including guitar great Steve Wariner and bluegrass legend Dan Tyminski. He also has a “Gary Mule Deer Live” CD of his comedy and music.
Gary is currently one of the most-played comedians on the Clean Comedy Channels of Sirius / XM Satellite Radio. Will Ferrell was asked by Dan Patrick at ESPN Magazine “It’s the seventh game, ninth inning of the World Series of Comedy. You have to pick a comedian to be out on the mound.” Will’s answer was Gary Mule Deer.

Gary Mule Deer's been using Dean Markley strings forever—singing and playing with Dean Markley Vintage Bronze Acoustic ML strings since the start of the company. On at least thirty different TV shows he has shot a cigarette out of a rubber chicken’s mouth with a rubber-tipped arrow, using a Dean Markley E string on his 1978 Gibson J-200, which he uses as a bow.
