Waylon Jennings

In an industry where the term “legend” is thrown around sometimes loosely, it’s not often you run across the real thing. Waylon Jennings was The Real Thing. When most of us were crawling around in diapers, Waylon was cutting his musical teeth in roadhouses and beer joints across the South of the 1950’s, risking life and limb for a few bucks and a few beers. His climb to success was never easy, but Waylon never gave up.

Though he was widely known as a nice guy beneath all the black, he wouldn’t tolerate his music being anything but true to his heart. “You start messin’ with my music, and I get mean,” he told The Associated Press in a 1992 interview. “As long as you are honest and upfront with me, I will be the same with you. But I still do things my way.”

Wednesday, February 14, 2002 was a sad day for us all, when Waylon passed away on his Arizona farm. Publicist Schatzi Hageman said Jennings died peacefully in his sleep. Jennings had been battling diabetes.

Truly an American Classic, Waylon will never be forgotten.
